What is Marine Insurance?

Marine insurance is designed to cover the transportation of goods by ocean or by land. Policies may include coverage for vessels and liability for third parties. With international trade continually expanding, maritime businesses are increasingly exposed to new risks and potential losses due to weather events, cargo theft, equipment damage, and more.

Different types of marine insurance cover different areas of the transport process—from the merchandise in transit to the port authority accepting the shipment. Industries with businesses that may need marine insurance include just about any that ship goods—technology, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, retail, food and beverage, and energy, to name a few.

The scenarios described herein are offered only as examples. Coverage depends on the actual facts of each case and the terms, conditions and exclusions of each individual policy.
